The silences of a novel seem to get lost more readily in narrative drive.Leehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13770069472552779217noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3161136885462262525.post-19143628695620617662009-03-01T19:30:00.000-08:002009-03-01T19:30:00.000-08:00Charles, Please forgive my absence. I'm going to give it more thought and comment as I think I can spend more time with it this week than I have had available during the past month.

I remember Barthelme's quote very well, “access to the ineffable.” In 1975 when I was trying to form my view of art, it struck all of us as correct. The idea behind a great piece of fiction was that the truth of it would transcend one’s ability to express that truth in simple terms. Of course, Barthelme lends one to that sort of observation… but there is a great truth in it.

I’ve been at Chekhov again lately, an overdue revisit. I wish I could read the Russian, but the story and structure are so well woven they transcend the translation. (Not the usual outcome).

Until later.Rolfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10407101807209230018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3161136885462262525.post-18039393875701856702009-02-28T03:38:00.000-08:002009-02-28T03:38:00.000-08:00I'm wondering if you might post a list of what you...I'm wondering if you might post a list of what you consider essential resources for considering the nature of the short story? Essays, criticism, theory - whatever you feel is interesting or valuable.Leehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13770069472552779217noreply@blogger.com
